We can all be gurus in various areas of enterprise, but when it comes to starting relationships many guys struggle at the first hurdle. Initially, dress fittingly; those first impressions really do count and for so many singletons the date is dead in the water before they even say hello, as they make the error of either turning up scruffy, or absolutely over dressed. Remember she will most likely be apprehensive, so you have to put her at ease. Ask basic questions, but then take note of what she has to say and act interested, even if you are not particularly engaged. Hold eye contact, but don’t stare. Look for things and pay her little compliments, but don’t overdo it, you want to avoid making the atmosphere embarrassing for her.

Avoid talking about football and the guys, unless of course she mentions them. You could perhaps mention the odd lad – that’s not a mate who is a bit odd, but a few of your close friends, just to show you’re not a loner and you like to socialise. You will be well received and if you wish to follow it up with another date, it is most likely to be accepted. Men are not well-known for picking up on signs of any kind, but they are there and in the main, fairly straight forward.
